Toast & Jam, Berlin's Vintage Fashion Fair

For the first time ever Berlin is having a vintage fashion fair called Toast & Jam. The name plays on Bread & Butter which is the name of the fashion week fair hosted at Tempelhof Airport across the street. I'll be there on the 19th and 20th of January at the Etsy booth and my fabulous assistant will be there on Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening there will also be a burlesque show at the closing party. Yowsa!

Here's a preview of a few of the items I'll have there for sale (not including a truly adorable cream-colored vintage 1950s taffeta dress!)

Vintage Make-Up Tips

I've recently realized that I have no idea how to properly apply make-up, especially for taking photographs. Whenever I put on eye makeup my eyes looked automatically smaller and I always looked way too pale and unglamorous when I posed in the vintage clothing I sell on Curious Knopf.

Well, all I have to say is thank god for the internet. Last night I got some tips on vintage make-up from Super Kawaii Mama. You can see the results in the photographs above. I'm wearing a fair amount of make-up in both, but it still looks natural and not too made up but also not too underdone. The two videos I watched are below. I like how down to earth she is and pleasant to listen to which is good because she has a lot of other great videos to watch.

Skirts Galore

As I expand my shop I've also been on the hunt for lots of great vintage circle skirts and vintage German Trachten "Dirndl" skirts like the one above. Although I also have some classics for sale like this lipstick red vintage 1980s pencil skirt or this Japanese school girl vintage 1960s wool plaid skirt, most of my finds have definitely been on the sweet and sassy folkloric side. Here's a peek at some of the highlights.

Vintage German Folk Pencil Skirt with Lederhosen-like Embroidery, a Linen Blend

Gorgeous Royal Purple Handmade Vintage Circle Skirt with Blue Batik Trim, Will Fit Most

Gorgeous Vintage German Trachten Skirt with a Lovely Sheen in Teal Plaid with Adorable Faux Pearl Trim

Festive Vintage German Folk Trachten Dirndl Skirt in Dark Red with Black and Gold Stripes and an Ingenious Waist System that Makes it Wearable for Any Size

Happy vintage shopping!

A New Look For Curious Knopf

As of last Monday I'm renting a small basement room so I can expand my vintage clothing shop (and also better store items from my photography shop.) I've been running the shop out of my apartment but our place is not that big and we have literally no storage space (why have they never heard of closets in Berlin?!?!) so for over a year vintage clothing has been literally coming out of our ears....

The room is a ten minute walk from my apartment and part of a juggling school/shop so I've already seen lots of amazing circus acts when I've been working there. The light was a big problem though and hanging the gray backdrop in just the right way was also a big challenge. A few days ago I started to despair when I thought I was going to have to shell out big bucks for studio equipment and those are big bucks I definitely don't have.

But then I found some great information on how to set up a photo studio on a budget from things you find at the hardware store (if you can read German, check out the article here.) I need to do a little bit of tweaking (still need to build that styrofoam tower to reduce the shadows...) but I think they turned out ok. And it all cost me way less than a 100 Euros which is even better. I'm going to be expanding Curious Knopf a whole heck of a lot in the coming months, so stay tuned.

Seeing Double

For a month or so I've been posting a lot of new vintage clothing finds in my shop with a double image. Unfortunately I've noticed the pieces have gotten very low views, I'm assuming because most searches on etsy are done with a thumbnail version which means they would be very hard to see. Still, I do think they look cool. Here's some of my favorites, soon to be changed to improve my views! :(
